Morning Rounds in Antigua: The Process of Healing

Morning Rounds in Antigua: The Process of Healing

Each morning in Antigua begins with quiet footsteps echoing through the halls of Obras Sociales Del Santo Hermano Pedro Hospital in Antigua, Guatemala as our Medical Missions Foundation doctors make their patient rounds. The city is just waking up—its cobblestone streets still cool from the night air, volcanoes standing watch in the distance—while inside the hospital, the work of healing is already underway.

Rounds are more than just a routine check-in. They’re an opportunity to connect—to reassure a nervous patient, to celebrate a successful surgery, and to witness the incredible resilience of the people we serve. Our team, made up of volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical staff, walks bed to bed, checking incisions, listening to lungs, adjusting care plans, and most importantly, offering a smile and a kind word.

Dr Scott Montgomery and Dr Tom Herrick assure the patient, he is on his way to recovery

Each patient has a story. A young child recovering from a tonsillectomy, already smiling again. An elderly man who waited years for prostate surgery. A mother who now has a chance to raise her children free of pain. A father who can now return to his job as a farmer, providing for his family. These moments are what fuel our mission.

In Antigua, medicine is about more than procedures. It’s about presence. And during these rounds, we’re reminded why we’re here: to provide care, build trust, and bring hope—one patient at a time.
